#MeToo was spray-painted on the leg of an statue modeled after a famous 1945 photo that became a symbol of the end of World War II. In the photo, a sailor is seen grabbing a woman in a nurse's uniform and kissing her in New York's Times Square. While the photo is viewed by some as a jubilant, romantic moment celebrating the end of the war, it's also been criticized for depicting an unwanted sexual encounter. The woman in the photo, Greta Friedman, who died in 2016, told the Veterans History Project in 2005 that the kiss wasn't consensual. The sailor, who has been identified as George Mendonsa, died on Sunday at the age of 95.
