What is an image? Karl Lagerfeld knew his way around one better than any in the business and so it is that his image-making might be the reason we will never forget him. Not only did he create clothing (he preferred not to think of himself just as a designer), but he built the scaffolding through which we will forever view his tweeds, his tulle, his Lesage-embroidered gowns. He extended clothing’s reach through immersive worlds. Through his experiential shows, he led the way in an area that so many brands seem to breathlessly evoke now: ‘experience’. It all means that when we see his clothes, we think immediately of, not only the sublime beading, the expertly crafted leather and fanciful flounces of feathers, but the worlds they might belong to. A Lagerfeld image is an experience, with the woman fronting up to the here-and-now with grace, optimism and style. We take a look back at his creations in the pages of Vogue Australia, demonstrating his skill at doing, as he once said, not what Coco Chanel has done but what she would have.
