For the @phmuseum 2018 Women Photographers Grant #VogueItalia was asked to pick three projects to be featured in the photography section. We’ve decided to choose ‘Äimärautio’ by Leinonen for a very simple reason: we loved the way the artist managed to create a nuanced, delicate story looking into her everyday life and environment. ‘Äimärautio was a natural choice for me to concentrate on. I am an amateur dressage rider and my horse lives in Äimärautio. So I spend all my spare time in the stables there anyways. It was natural to approach my everyday surroundings and the people I see on a daily bases. I didn’t have to go anywhere I normally wouldn’t, I just carried my Mamiya with me every day for two years. Despite the project being very local, focused around the small community of horse people in Northern Finland, it deals, at the same time, with current issues such as the relationship between mankind and animals and mankind and nature. So I hoped it had the potential to reach the people outside the community. Having said that, the project was something I needed to do even if it didn’t, so I didn’t really think about it until after I stopped photographing and started editing the book.’ Read more on vogue.it
