A New State of Mind
In early 2015, I was invited to direct the first episode in the feature film ‘Berlin, I Love You.’ The film is a sequel in the ‘Cities of Love’ series, which includes ‘Paris, je t’aime’ and ‘New York, I Love You.’ Wang Fen, my girlfriend, and Ai Lao, my son, were also involved in screenwriting and acting roles respectively. At this time, I was living under soft detention in Beijing and unable to leave China. I remotely directed the episode from my studio in Beijing, watching through the computer screen as my son rode his bicycle along the Berlin Wall Memorial.
I learned today that the film has been released in the United States and that our contribution has been removed. It was infuriating to find our involvement had been erased, especially since we had not received any prior notice from the production team. Even though our involvement was used to promote the film, the reason we were given for the episodes removal was that my political status had made it difficult for the production team to secure further funding. We discovered that one of the executive producers of the film is also producing a Shanghai installment of the series.(1)
