To coincide with the @gatesfoundation annual letter, I’ve been talking about this year’s theme of surprises, and how small realisations actually relate to sustainable development around the world.⁣ ⁣ In the letter, @melindafrenchgates talked about phones providing convenience vs. providing accessibility, which really made me think - mobile phones are most powerful in the hands of the world’s poorest women, not because they’re convenient (like they are for me) but because communication and internet access provide opportunities for education, reproductive autonomy and financial independence that they wouldn’t otherwise have. ⁣ ⁣ There are a lot of surprising facts in the 2019 letter. If you’ve never read it before, it’s something @billgates and @melindafrenchgates put out annually to reflect on development and reenergise for more progress in the year ahead.
