#CeCeMcDonald is a prison abolition and trans rights activist who made international headlines in 2012 after she was attacked outside a bar in Minneapolis, stabbed her attacker in self-defence, and was sentenced for manslaughter. ⠀

Her story – which eventually led to Free CeCe! (@freececedoc), a documentary directed by Jacqueline Gares and produced by @lavernecox, after her release in 2014 – drew much-needed attention to the disproportionate violence and injustice that trans women of colour face in the US and beyond. ⠀

In an interview, she reveals the conditions that lead to the incarceration of trans individuals – in a world that doesn’t try to keep them safe. ⠀
