This week's #RoleModelMonday is director and writer Tayarisha Poe, known for her debut feature "Selah and the Spades." The film was inspired by her own life experience at a boarding school in New Jersey. She beautifully portrays the delicate teenage years and how character Selah Summers will navigate her identity amongst the power and cattiness that penetrates the high school hallways. “How often does a black girl get the chance, in fiction, to be whoever she wants to be?” asks Tayarisha, “To not smile when she’s told? To manipulate the world to her advantage? I started to imagine a girl at 17 who spits on the idea of fitting into a box for the comfort of others.
