A total of 39,506 people applied for a spot in Harvard University’s undergraduate class of 2021, and just 2,037 were accepted — that’s an acceptance rate of roughly 5.2%. Richard Jenkins was one of the lucky few to earn a spot, and his story stands out.

Richard spent much of his childhood moving between homeless shelters, a hospital bed and motel rooms. He committed himself to academics and went on to show the bullies that nicknamed him “Harvard” that he could earn live up to the name.

As valedictorian of his class, he will have the opportunity to address his peers at his high school graduation. Richard’s advice for other students is to figure out what they want out of life, focus and never give up. “Once you find what it is that you want, you have to keep working for it,” Richard told @cnbcmakeit. “People may think that they’ve done enough, but it’s never enough.” You can read more on the obstacles Richard had to overcome to make it to Harvard, at the link in bio. *
