On the 31st December 2018 Sango Mayalo of South Africa, and Mozambicans; Mawili Ndlovu, Amdry Masia, Elton Khosa and Hilario Euro were caught in possession of a rhino horn at a roadblock outside Bloemfontein after endangered species unit Captain Mornay Viljoen tipped off police in other provinces after suspicious vehicles were spotted together leaving Grahamstown. After two days in the magistrates and an excellent and compelling case from the state prosecution Buks Coetzee, the four Mozambicans, three of which were in the country illegally, were denied bail on the grounds of previous convictions and the likelihood that they may flee the country. Mr Mayalo of Grahamstown was granted bail of R50,000, a price significantly higher than previous similar cases. The trial officially starts of March 2019 in the Grahamstown regional courts. This is one of three high profile rhino poaching cases that are ongoing in Grahamstown. Captain Viljoen, his team, Grahamstown SAPS and state prosecution are working tirelessly and making incredible progress in combatting rhino poaching in the Eastern Cape. Other high profile cases involving rhino poaching syndicates and kingpins are awaiting the results of these three cases, and, if convicted, the severity of the sentences. The outcomes will therefore be crucial to the future of rhino in South Africa. We can only hope that the courts of Grahamstown make examples of these cases to judiciaries across the country. I’ll be attending all of the cases so stay updated here. #rhino #rhinopaching #saveourrhino #stoppoaching #justiceforrhino #conservation #wildlife
