Few things embody unbridled joy more than a dog. Their love is unconditional, they are deeply loyal, and after witnessing firsthand the capabilities of a service dog, it sometimes feels like we don’t deserve these amazing creatures.

Photographing them though—particularly a puppy like Cousteau here—requires some patience. In order to increase my odds of success, I went with a technique called 'close-focus, wide-angle.' The optic is a wide 20mm lens—not a 'traditional' portrait lens, but one that is often overlooked. Of course, the lens is so wide that I’m just inches from his nose, but even at f/11 there is still focus falloff toward the grass. It was an overcast day, so I placed a single Speedlight about 12 feet up on a light stand to add some contrast to the existing light. The 20mm combined with a little additional contrast from the Speedlight delivers a feeling of being in his face, rather than the more distant feel of a traditional portrait lens. Give it a try on something where you want the viewer feel 'right there.'
