Black History Month In America Image vs Image: A Reflection A large part of Black History in America is not about black people directly but the portrayal of black people indirectly, the image. Who controls that image or has the power to tweak that image became a battle ground of sorts. As a cousin of slavery it gave control over the perception and thus reception of black folks into society back to the “masters” who had lost the control of their physical bodies. Media campaigns of all sizes and shapes “presented” black folk in all manner of strange and unfounded ways so as to control the image of black people not only to the mass audience but also to black folk themselves. Some of The tricks are subtle and measured and are meant to work on the subliminal plane while others are downright loud and obvious and meant to shock in the moment of greatest opportunity. The Image Of Black Folks in America is still being fought for up until this moment and is one of the last active battlegrounds that reaches across from the trivial to the political to the spiritual. This literal battle for the image gives something like the coveted NAACP “IMAGE” Award much more of a seriousness as well as films like Black Panther. In this battle the photoshop is indeed mightier than the sword. However there is a risk that one can worry too much about the image of the person and the not actual affairs of the person and be drawn away from a more important war to one that cannot be won but only fought. #BHM
