In honor of Black History Month, I would like to acknowledge and honor the great Fred Thompson. The Track & Field community lost Mr Thompson late last month. Mr. Thompson was a practicing attorney who eventually gave up his career to dedicate his life to coaching the Atoms Track Club for girls and women out of NYC. He coached national and Olympic medalists including @DianeDixon, Cheryl Toussaint, and Lorna Forde. Some of his athletes have even gone on to become lawyers, doctors, and educators. Mr Thompson was also the founding organizer of the Colgate Women’s Games, my very first track meet. I remember hearing his voice at Pratt Institute and the Colgate Finals over the years. Mr Thompson championed women in sports, and demanded excellency through good grades and personal responsibility. He is being laid to rest today in Brooklyn, and I would like extend my love and condolences to Mr Thompson’s friends and family. The track & field community truly lost a great man. His legacy and mark on women’s track & field will always be remembered and honored. Thank you Mr Thompson. ❤️
