Every girl like 5-year-old Fatma has the right to decide her own future. Fatma’s mother, Alawia, chose not to have her daughter cut. The issue of female genital mutilation was discussed at a training for traditional birth attendants and community volunteers, spurring public discussion about the practice in Sudan. “People are becoming a lot more open to the idea of abandoning the practice,” Alawia explains. “I am determined that Fatma attends secondary school and have a proper education like her brothers.” Together with partners, we’re working to #ENDviolence against girls and women and #endFGM once and for all. © UNICEF/UNI73765/Holt
