MY CONNECTION WITH LANGUAGES AND MUSIC [part 4]

People have many different ways of escaping their troubles. My escapes were music and languages. By the age of ten, on the language side, I was speaking Cantonese, Diojiu, Mandarin, and English; and learning Vietnamese, French, and Japanese. On the music side, I learned how to play the piano and violin. I still sang, but casually and secretly - childhood insecurities got the best of me. Violin class was free, which was pretty awesome for my immigrant parents who sold clothes at the local swap meet. I loved everything and anything that had to do with music. I had to escape many things... as you may have read about in previous posts.

As I went on to middle school, I picked up the guitar, and taught myself how to play when I was twelve. Well, Yahoo search engine taught me, but still - yeah, “self-taught”. I started singing and playing, but I wasn’t very good - at least, not to me. Like most people, I don’t like listening to the sound of my own voice. It’s ironic because I am mainly a vocalist now, and it’s still weird for me to listen to my own recordings and edit my own videos. To help with this, I usually refer to my recorded voices and images as “she” instead of “I” to remove myself from the situation. For example, “she was off-beat there. Can I record that part again?”. ??‍♀️ That’s how I roll.

I attempted to write songs at that age, but most of them were comedic or parodies of some kind. The art of comedy was always an interest to me as well. I was a Girl Scout, and we wrote and performed many comedic skits. It was so fun! Comedy is the perfect escape - more on this topic later.
