I thought it was a point of arrival but it was instead the starting point: the audience of the Ariston Theater, my mother cheering for me, my father at the back of the room, moved and silent, Italy in front of the TV... I remember that those few meters to reach the piano on stage seemed to be miles while - in my leather jacket and the collar up, debuting although already thirty five - I reflected on the fact in the duration of a song, I was playing my last card, the last chance to turn my biggest passion into my career. Then music held my hand and has never left me since.
On Tuesday, after 25 years, I will return to the Sanremo Festival of Italian Music with a different emotion, yet equally intense: I return full of gratitude, for life and for the audience that has given me so much love. I am going home, I come back here, where it all started.

Pensavo fosse un punto d’arrivo ed era invece il punto di partenza: il pubblico dell’Ariston, la mia mamma a fare il tifo, il mio babbo in fondo alla sala, commosso e silenzioso, l’Italia davanti al televisore... Ricordo che quei pochi metri per raggiungere il pianoforte sul palco mi sembrarono chilometri, mentre – giubbotto di pelle e bavero alzato, esordiente ma già trentacinquenne – riflettevo sul fatto che nel tempo d’una canzone mi stavo giocando l’ultima carta, l’ultima possibilità di fare, della mia più grande passione, la mia professione. Poi, la musica m’ha preso per mano e da allora non mi ha più lasciato.
Martedì, dopo 25 anni, torno al Festival di Sanremo con una emozione diversa, eppure ugualmente intensa: torno colmo di riconoscenza, per la vita e per il pubblico che tanto amore mi ha dato. Torno a casa, torno qui, dove tutto è cominciato.
