Parts of the American Midwest ground to a halt on Jan. 30 as some of the lowest temperatures recorded in a generation left some city streets largely deserted, mail suspended in some areas and eyelashes able to freeze within just minutes. #Chicago, where an icebreaker is seen cutting a path on the Chicago River, dropped to a low of around -23 (-30 Celsius), the Associated Press reports, just slightly above the city’s lowest-ever reading of -27 (-32 Celsius) from 1985. Protection of vulnerable populations like seniors and the homeless was a focus in dozens of cities. At least eight deaths were attributed to the deep freeze, which resulted from a split in the #polarvortex, the AP adds, or a blast of cold air that usually remains in the Arctic.
