When designer Maria Amtoft Mikkelsen designs in her Copenhagen living room, her mind frequently wanders to a different era: "I pretend that I'm a cool neo-romantic artist from the 1970s." Mikkelsen’s obsession with this era, and with the iconic styles of musicians of the day like David Bowie and Nico, is infused into each of the velvet bodysuits she’s created under her newly launched label, @AmiMuseStudio.
The bodysuits, and the hand-beaded straps that are hold them up, are atypical of Scandinavian design. As Mikkelsen notes, “I like to challenge the minimalism we’re known for here.” Her pieces do stand out on their own, especially considering that both bodysuits and beading are two of the most prevalent trends in contemporary fashion and on social media right now.
