This week on #ScienceSunday we’re looking at how “sugar snakes” are made! •
We can demonstrate thermal decomposition and combustion through this experiment. Starting with sand in a bowl, and followed by lighter fluid with a baking soda/sugar mixture on top... you get the sugar snake. A few reactions are occurring so let’s talk about them. As sugar burns, it combusts to yield carbon dioxide and water vapor (both gases) BUT require a good oxygen supply. The sugar that doesn’t have access to the oxygen heats up and starts to decompose aka produce SOLID carbon and water vapor. Thats where the snake’s black color and solid shape come from. Lastly, the baking soda also undergoes decomposition to produce SOLID sodium carbonate as well as carbon dioxide/ water vapor. These reactions are how we get this really awesome sugar snake.
