“Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now” is now on view, presenting a yearlong look into the groundbreaking work of New York photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. In 1963, at the age of sixteen, Mapplethorpe enrolled at the @PrattInstitute where he studied drawing, painting, and sculpture. In 1970 he acquired his first Polaroid camera and started producing his own photographs. He went on to create a powerful body of work which includes photographs of male and female nudes, floral still lifes, portraits of artist and celebrity friends, depictions of New York's underground S&M scene, and self-portraits.
