What a journey for Mariano Rivera to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a fisherman at heart and soccer was his favorite sport growing up. He didn’t start pitching until he was 19. And today, he became the first player in Major League Baseball history to be elected to the Hall of Fame by unanimous vote. Incredible.

I’m elated for Mo, his lovely wife Clara, and their three kids. This is the ultimate closure for the career of the ultimate closer. He was simply the best at the position in the history of the game and perhaps the greatest athlete and could-have-been center fielder that I ever played with in my career. One of my greatest thrills was calling Mo a teammate, a friend and a brother, even though there were many days where he called me other things. ?? I’ll never forget that at 40 years old, we had more than 70 players invited to spring training, and he had the highest vertical jump of anyone.

But Mo is much more than an amazing athlete. He is one of the best people and ambassadors for our great sport, and I am forever fortunate to have played alongside him. Plus, the fact that I didn’t have to face him in the ninth inning for most of my career was a huge bonus. ?

There’s nothing cooler in sports than watching the gates of Yankee Stadium open and 60,000 fans going crazy as Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” blasted throughout the place. It was electric.
