Today we’d like to recognize both MLK, Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, who after her husband’s death continued to dedicate herself to civil rights activism. Among other things, she was a very outspoken supporter of freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation, which she said “is surely a fundamental human right in any great democracy, as much as freedom from racial, religious, gender, or ethnic discrimination.” She was a brave and most awesome lady.
Perhaps what is most inspiring to us about her is the way she spoke about MLK, Jr.’s legacy - that she would say she was dedicated “to the completion of his work.” Completion. The notion that this journey has an end - a day when discrimination such as this actually no longer exists - wow...
