Our eldest daughter Mabel is in 1st grade. She’s been learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and has been so proud to tell me what she’s learned about him, his work and legacy.
It’s heartbreaking as a parent when you have to start chipping away at their innocence and explain that life isn’t all unicorns and rainbows.
What is rewarding, however, is to see her reaction— her little face filled with confusion and disgust when I talk to her about racism and how people like Dr. King gave up his life fighting against it.
It is vital that I continue to raise their awareness young so they can continue to be respectful and embrace people for who they are without prejudice in a world that is unfortunately filled with so much hate and seemingly spun out of control. Teaching them this truly starts in the home #MLK #MartinLutherKingJr
