And I think that what they all have in common is special kind of eccentricity, an unconventional lifestyle. The champion of them all, in my view, is Stephen Tennant. Hero of a bigone era (1906-1987), obstinate adherent to an absolutely personal aesthetic; the photos of him shot by his friend Cecil Beaton are among my favourites of all time. Among them, the one in which Tennant appears as Prince Charming best expresses his spirit. Though shot far from prying eyes, this photograph is at the same time terribly brazen. Ironic in the pomp of the staging and the perfectionism of the details, it is also a reflection on the passage of time and a mischievous celebration of youth and beauty.’ Keep reading the article in our new issue. #NewElegance
