"Deep Blue was sighted on Sunday, January 13th. I am one of two original divers who were first in the water with her. We made sure to get ID shots as well as shots to later estimate size. It was an absolutely breathtaking experience, and really quite humbling to be in the presence of this great shark. She is an absolutely beautiful and magnificent being that both commands and deserves respect. That being said, swimming with her and documenting her behavior as she fed and dove and fed for hours over the course of the day was both exhilarating and serene. All her movements were efficient but still beautifully fluid. To be totally honest, I've been a bit more afraid of the media than I was swimming with Deep Blue.

It's been the best news ever that we were able to positively ID Deep Blue. It’s also important to note that we've begun the identification process on the other two sharks that were seen (there are a total of three unique great white sharks that have been documented which is huge news for science and supports a lot of the papers that have been written). Having ID data is absolutely critical to getting scientists data to learn more about their migratory patterns and behaviors. We're getting to connect the scientific dots. The second largest female which was sighted on Tuesday has since been catalogued and named Haole Girl, she's estimated to be between 16-18 ft long and also pregnant. We're still working on identifying Monday’s great white.
