Micah Emmanuel is 7 today and what a kid he is! Micah is intellectual and thoughtful. He is an introvert and he’s extremely focused. He loves reading and cracking jokes that involve playing on words. He’s literal and specific and very concerned with accuracy. Micah is also unexpectedly courageous. I say “unexpected” because he gets nervous about a lot of stuff. He’s nervous going to the doctor. The anticipation of shots is almost too much for him. He’s scared of villains in movies, and will walk out of a room and just peak in from a distance if there’s even a whiff of drama on the screen. So one might not immediately think “that kid is brave” when they take him in. But they’d be wrong. Micah knows how to Dare Greatly. During his last belt test for Tae Kwon Do, Micah shut his fingers in a door a few minutes before the test. He was beside himself. He is concerned with accuracy, and because you have to close your fingers fully to make your fist for punches, he thought he might fail in his form because of the bandaid wrapped around his finger. He was also scared of the pain and worried that it might distract him. I told him it was his choice. He could go home and ask to do a make up test, or he could stand on the mat and do the test with a wrapped finger, feeling the pain. When his instructor asked him if he wanted to test, Micah sniffled and said, “yes, sir”. He then stepped onto the mat, did his whole test, and even broke 2 boards at once on his first try. At one point, when he was getting ready to do his green belt form, he broke down a bit and tears started falling, but he stood his ground like a FREAKING BOSS, tears and all, and did his form from start to finish without running away or hiding his pain. I have never been more proud of that boy. He was afraid of failure. He was afraid of pain, but with great courage and vulnerability, he stood out there on the mat in front of everyone, letting his tears fall without shame, and accomplished what he set out to do with his whole heart. If that’s not Daring Greatly, I don’t know what is. Happy Birthday to my courageous, tender, brilliant little man. I love getting to be your Mama.

Happy Birthday to my courageous, tender, brilliant little man. I love getting to be your Mama.
