This week’s #PeopleofZipp features Chuck Warren, test equipment engineer. He builds custom machines in our test lab. He’s pumped up a Zipp Carbon Clincher to more than three times normal tire pressure (don’t do this!), waiting for the rim to burst. It didn’t. Instead, the machine maxed out. Chuck loads wheels onto bump drums and designs tests to simulate misery—grit, rain, rough roads. It’s a paradox that it takes someone who loves building and repairing things to be the expert at breaking them. The goal of the Zipp test team is to expose weaknesses so engineers can fix them. “It’s a whole lot of learning, getting rid of assumptions.” Chuck loves fixing old cars. He once hauled a long-neglected Volvo from a barn in Sheboygan, Wis., home to Indiana and rebuilt it from the ground up. He has an engineering degree from Purdue but once cut class to visit a junkyard in search of parts. That mechanical curiosity led him bikes, working in shops and the Major Taylor Velodrome, commuting, and racing CX and track. “I don’t sit still,” he said.
