#Kabul, #Afghanistan, 1995. Lying between two hills next to the Kabul River, the Kabul zoo was often on the front lines during the civil war in the 1990's. Many animals were killed during the shelling or starved to death when there was little interest in preserving the unique animals and plants native to Afghanistan. This fighter with his weapon sits on a preserved tiger, thought to have been one of the zoo's collection.
Today, the zoo is usually an island of peace in a chaotic city which is criss-crossed by blast walls, razor wire, and strangled by traffic jams.
