My BOTM is “The Spy and the Traitor” by Ben Macintyre. A hugely entertaining historical account of the early 1980s when relations between the West and the Soviet Union were at their worst since the Cuban missile crisis. This is an extraordinary story of a high ranking defector from the KGB, and the clearest explanation of the nuance and dangerous complexity of tradecraft I’ve read. It is also an intensely human story, of the emotional cost of lies, deception and secret lives. It was in this tense historical period that I wrote Russians and Every Breath You Take, and both songs are freighted with anxiety and ambiguity, and paranoia.
