Visiting Ghana for the first time was bittersweet.. simultaneously feeling like I had finally arrived home and pouring salt on an open wound. Having the opportunity to learn more about the horrors of the Transatlantic Slave Trade while walking the grounds of Cape Coast Castle broke my heart into pieces. Having the opportunity to sit in dungeons where my ancestors were held captive, starved, beaten, raped and murdered left me speechless. Those who stole us from our land went to great lengths to separate our families, strip us of our religion, and split us from our culture. Their efforts were calculated, intentional, and meant to divide us in ways so we’d never ever find our way back.
This new year of 2019 marks 400 years since the first slave ship departed the shores of West Africa for Virginia, USA. I’m so thankful to my friend @badassboz for planning this #FullCircleFestival during the #YearOfReturn. What a powerful bond we’ve created having the opportunity to celebrate together our resilience as people of the diaspora. The level of inhumanity that existed during the Transatlantic Slave Trade was incomparable. I feel proud of our resilience. After sitting in the same dungeons my ancestors likely passed through and survived, I know there is no excuse for failure. We must go above and beyond, because our ancestors went beyond. This solidifies my belief that nothing can break us. EVER.
