My guy @sebbouin climbing a route that in my mind represents a turning point in Spanish/Catalunyan climbing (circa 2005-2007). This is Definición de Resistancia Demócraticá which is now considered 9a. The modern hype of Spain (specifically Catalunya) picked up rapidly when Andrada took up residence and revisited cliffs like this, Terradetes. He took the levels higher by adding connections and filling in the gaps. He then proceeded to develop cliffs like Santa Linya with the others like Andoni Perez, Victor Fernandez, and Chris Sharma. If you know St. Linya then you know how stacked it is (along with Oliana, 40 min away). It was quiet back then even desolate. It was the calm before the storm. I wonder if those guys knew what an epicenter they were creating... they had to right? It’s fun to put yourself into the developers mind-state and picture what they were thinking drilling that first bolt hole. How did it feel lowering to the ground at the end of the day, knowing they’d just created something that would last forever and be enjoyed by future generations? These route developers are the visionaries and the ones making their mark. Is there anything longer lasting in climbing than leaving a route? Thanks Chris, Dani, Victor, Patxi, Iker, Bernabe, Toni, Jordi, Andoni, David, Primo, and Luis among many others for giving us so many satisfying challenges and making Spain a motivator for the world. And by the way... Definición de Resistancia Demócraticá is still considered a test piece and has withstood the test of progression and modernity.
