Remember going to the beach as a kid - how exciting it was to search for seashells, build sandcastles, skim board and surf?
That same excitement I got as a kid still happens to me when I go to the beach because I only go about once per year. It’s a different world that I get to explore.
This trip was different though. This trip was meant for surfing and exploration but it turned into a trash gathering party day after day at the beach. Don’t get me wrong, I got beat up on the surf board in the ocean, but I spent about an hour before that each day picking up plastic and trash that washed ashore. I picked up everything - old flip flops, legos that were aged by the sun and the salt, other kids’ toys, tons of bottle caps, plastic bags, travel sized plastic bottles, eye drop bottles, floss containers, straws, plastic sucker sticks, balloon pieces, tons of little bits of plastic from who knows what, along with Tupperware lids, and old oil bottles (to name a few). This trash in the photo is a fraction of what I gathered. Instead of searching for seashells, I picked up the trash.
If this isn’t heart breaking enough, keep reading. Playa Ostional in Costa Rica is a place for turtle ? nesting. The turtles come up in the evening and during the night when the black sand is cooler for them to travel up on the beach to burry their eggs. After a bit of time the eggs hatch ? and baby turtles make their way to the ocean. Pretty cool right? Well, the egg pieces sit on top of the sand and are white and rigid. To my eye, there were so many times where I confused a piece of white plastic for a turtle shell. And if my eye cant see the difference sometimes then we know other animals are making the same mistake. Except these animals eat the plastic, and then it gets stuck in their belly...and need I go on?
For 2019 I pledge to do better for our planet ?, for all the animals ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?, for our future generations, and for myself.
