I slept on the floor of a sad, sad toddlers room. Every few minutes she would stand up and look for me.
“Mamma?”
“Yes?”
“Sitta där, mamma” (sit there, mommy)
”Jag sitter här älskling” (I’m right here baby)
“Hålla handen” (hold my hand)
20 minutes later:
“Mamma?”
And so the night went. I spent most of it like that. Lying on the floor, holding her little hand through the railing of the crib. Listening to her breathing. I don’t know why she was so sad and if she had nightmares or what it was. I just know I love her so fucking much. I would spent every night for the rest of my life on a cold, hard floor if it helps her feel safe.
This morning I am feeling sore and raw and grateful and vulnerable and totally in love. It’s the first day back at day care and she just left with daddy, dragging her little backpack behind her.
“Bye bye mamma!” she says. “I love you. See you soon.” She says I love you without the v and emphasizes the SOON of the see you soon and every word out of her mouth makes my heart expand out of my chest. Yesterday she said “Amazing” and I swear, I almost fainted right there.
Motherhood. Amazing, indeed.
