Franca Sciuto, Chair of the Rainforest Fund, has now weighed in on the new administration in Brazil:
"We are greatly concerned regarding the latest announcements by Brazil’s new government on the transfer of indigenous land demarcation to the ministry of agriculture which has historically opposed recognizing the rights of communities to their traditional lands. Further changes regarding the procedure for licensing infrastructures projects in indigenous lands, reductions in the budget for indigenous health care and the opening of traditional lands to cattle ranching demand attention. We call on the new administration to respect the rights of all communities enshrined in the Brazilian constitution and Brazilian law and support all indigenous groups in their struggle for recognition.”
