Exactly four months ago I got drunk at a Taylor Swift concert and had an epiphany: I didn’t want to live with regrets. I have never worked hard enough to live up to the potential of my talent. I’d always been the laziest professional athlete I knew, and I got by on talent for years, until harder workers than me started catching up and I quit. It felt easier to quit and say, “back when” than to put in the work. Newsflash, it DOESN’T hurt less to not try than to try and not win. That’s exactly where regret comes from. I know I’m old, and I don’t recover as fast, and have been out of the game for a while and the sport has changed. But in being older, I’m also wiser, more experienced, and a better climber than I’ve ever been. And surprisingly, I actually think I might be as strong as I’ve ever been, too. So, in my New Years resolution of being more “open and vulnerable on social media,” here it is: I’ve been training my ass off these last four months, in hopes of throwing my hat back in, for the big leagues this time; sport’s biggest stage, every four years. I’ve got my work cut out for me, and I’m starting my comeback already behind the top contenders, but I’d hate myself if I didn’t at least try. I’m taking a shot at those fuckin’ rings. Thank you to the people who listened to my drunken dreams and told me to go for it. You know who you are. Here’s to 2019.
