#christmas2018 images-this Christmas, more than any other, I’ve been aware of how ritual and tradition, expectation and anticipation give meaning to our identity and influence on the timeline of our life. As beloved family members are aging into their transition time, I’m keenly aware of what it means to be the keeper of the flame and what makes memories worth sharing. Here’s what touched me today- my dear friend Alicia brought us her hand-made tamales, a tradition in her Mexican culture which has earned it’s honor; my maternal Grandmother Sams’ Pink Vista stonewear is what we dined on at Christmas meals every year when I was a kid and I’ve inherited pieces that make me genuinely happy to think of her loving table so carefully curated. The tiny Christmas tree brings cheer to my beloved mother-in-law‘s hospital room and today we decked it out with an ornament of a photo that was taken of them a year ago before her illness. It’s not only precious because it such a wonderful photo and could never have happened if my husband and I hadn’t captured their pose at the same time from different angles, (remember- the flash is your friend) but it’s also a constant reminder of her 64-year marriage to a man so deeply devoted that at 92 he has the dedication and found the strength to visit her hospital room every day for the last four months. And finally, a new tradition for our dog Parker, who looks so good in a Santa hat that he’s going to have to wear it every year? I hope you make some memories this year with people and things that you love. #MerryChristmas?
