An 8 year old Guatemalan boy has died in border patrol custody on Christmas Day. A 7 year old girl died similarly last week. I am deeply saddened by this and angry that we have allowed our nation to implement policy that is not only destroying the lives of children and families fleeing violence and extreme poverty, but is now actually taking those lives. It was set up with no plan of how children would be returned to their families and today hundreds remain in detention long after the deadline of which their families were to be reunited. No plan was made to allocate resources for the health needs of these children and now two have died. I can’t imagine how I would feel if I had travelled hundreds of miles on foot and in crowded trucks, with only my most basic belongings and the hope in my heart, my son in my arms, hungry, tired, fleeing conditions where I witnessed my neighbors killed only to end up in a jail with my child - dead...on Christmas morning. This policy needs to end NOW! I grew up in a community where I went to school with the children of migrant farm workers. Their families endured extremely low wages, moving several times a year, doing backbreaking work in cancer causing pesticide ridden conditions, all so that our families could enjoy the food on our tables on Christmas. Good, hardworking people who worked their asses off to elevate their families and contribute greatly to our communities. Don’t believe the fear mongering that is being spouted that these families are all criminals coming here to threaten your life. They are impoverished people fleeing violence and they deserve a fighting chance just like any other immigrant family who has come to America for precisely the same reasons. There are very few people in America who can lay claim to being the original inhabitants of this land. Some of us came by choice, some of us were born here, and others among us were brought here by force. Please remember during this holy season that all lives are precious and no matter how we got here, everyone is worthy of being treated with kindness, respect and opportunity...especially those who need it most. #stayhuman
