Diana, 14, showed me the checkpoint that she has to cross each day to reach her school bus. It’s essentially crossing from one side of the conflict in eastern Ukraine to the other. Diana lives with her mother, Natalia, in a ‘no man’s land’ - directly between the two opposing sides. Not even her friends are allowed to cross this checkpoint to visit her because the area is too dangerous.

“We have our bags packed, ready to leave if it gets really dangerous,” said Natalia. “During the day, there’s no shooting, well, not in our direction. At night we’re so tired that we don’t hear anything.” It’s not easy for families to just pick up and move. Natalia said the family had tried to move somewhere safer in the village but the houses had either been damaged or lost access to water.

Diana’s previous school was shelled so now she travels two hours to a safer school in another town. Because of all this travel, she has to get up at 5.30am every day and is very tired after school. “I want to be a kindergarten teacher for the first grade when I grow up,” Diana said. “I like taking care of children.”
