From #NikonAmbassador @joeyterrill: “Nothing beats hanging out of the open door of a helicopter with a camera in your hands—unless you’re simultaneously hovering over 18 holes of beauty. This is Coronado Golf course—just five minutes from downtown San Diego over the Coronado Bay Bridge. With yachts on the water and the San Diego skyline in the background, using an aerial platform was a natural choice.

There are many ways to work from a helicopter, but it’s always essential to have specific and precise communication with the pilot. In this case, I’m wearing a headset that allows me to request a lower altitude, to orbit right or left, and when to hold position. I chose a very wide lens to show the expanse of the course and its surroundings, but because the light was peeking in and out through the clouds, the wide lens also made it possible to minimize any haze or moisture in the air between the camera and the golf course. By using a super-wide lens and positioning the helicopter very close to the course itself, I was able to reduce the ‘atmosphere’ to a minimum and obtain a clear image along with a view of the city.
