Having evolved to live in high grass savannahs, the maned wolf looks a lot like a long-legged fox, but don’t let its looks deceive you! As it turns out, the maned wolf is neither a fox nor a wolf but its own distinct species and the only member of the genus Chrysocyon. Along with many other unique species like the giant armadillo and giant anteater, the maned wolf calls the Cerrado home. The Cerrado is an expansive tropical savanna that makes up the largest area of plant and animal life in South America. The main threat faced by maned wolves is habitat destruction ​for soy production, cattle ranching, and the burning of vegetation for charcoal. As a result, the once vast ​Cerrado has been reduced to only 20% of its original size. Collision with vehicles and disease transmission via domestic dogs also pose serious threats for this species.
