My history of the Madonna: sometime around 1984, I was doing a lot of one-footed airs and variations (judo, frigid, Saran Wrap, etc), so I learned to take my foot off before hitting the tail on a Lein air. It felt unstable at first because I barely got my foot on in time. I did a couple one day but didn’t think much of it at the time. My friend @lesterkasai and I were having a conversation about learning tricks and I complained to him that nobody seems to like the tricks I was creating (as in, I rarely saw others doing them or bothering to try them). He suggested naming a new trick after something trendy in order to make it more palatable to other skaters. The trendiest thing we could think of at that time was Madonna; she was all over MTV and played constantly on the radio. He then said “what about that one-footed lein to tail you just learned? Call it a Madonna!” I’ll never know if it was the trick or the name, but it seemed to work because I still see them in the wild. The backside Madonna was created shortly after, so we named it the Sean Penn. Here is one from1985, one from 2005 and my favorite variation (fakie 360) from 2007.
