The small town of Ouchi-juku gets ready for the town's main festival every year by preparing lanterns made from snow. Candles will be placed inside these lanterns during the Ouchi-juku Snow Festival. In keeping with its status as an Important Preservation District for a Group of Historic Buildings, Ouchi-juku has no street lamps! This means that during the evenings of the snow festival, these lanterns and the small signs of each shop and inn are the only sources of light in the town.
