After a two week clubhouse hiatus, Juxtapoz Sound and Vision is back! This week we’re taking a look back at Animal Collective’s “Merriweather Post Pavillion,” only weeks away from the album’s 10th birthday. The album captured the true meeting point of Animal Collective’s wide array of styles, fusing their signature psych-folk sound with pop precision. It became an instant classic, recognizable throughout the indie and mainstream worlds alike.

The cover art matches the music effortlessly; an entrancing illusory experience that plays off our most basic sensory instincts. Taken from a Japanese professor named Akiyoshi Kitaoka, the optical illusion is an illustration of how the human brain creates motion where none exists. Kitaoka uses these illustrations as part of his study on Gestalt Psychology, which explores how humans find and create meaning from seemingly meaningless events. The iconic cover captures the perfect harmony found within Animal Collective’s music, synthesizing nonsensical sounds into a glorious whole. #juxtapozsoundandvision
