When the sensational, spectacular @spiderversemovie opened with a Comics Code Authority seal, I nearly shot *my* webs! #intothespiderverse is a warm, wonderful love letter to the paper medium that spawned a billion dollar industry. It’s truly the greatest comic book movie ever made, in that it’s the closest thing to a comic book come-to-life we’ve ever seen on the big screen, right down to the Zip-A-Tone veneer! Packed with expert animation, an emotionally rooted plot, legit laugh-out-loud moments and unforgettable performances, these web-slingers feel more real than the flesh-and-blood characters in most non-cartoon movies. But as much as I loved the Spider-friends, I was blown away by Kingpin. It feels like the filmmakers drew inspiration from my favorite rendition of the character, as seen in the Frank Miller and @billsienkiewiczart Daredevil classic, “Love & War.” He’s depicted as the impossibly oversized brutal street-thug-turned-mob-boss Sienkiewicz painted, and his super crime that could destroy the worlds stems from a poignant pursuit of lost love Miller imagined. A superhero story is only as good as its villains, and Into the SpiderVerse gives us not only a fantastic Fisk but also a distinctive and diabolical Doc Ock, a powerful Prowler and a gargantuan Green Goblin - all of whom have zero qualms about killing a kid in a store-bought mask. But our wallcrawlers are plucky and plenty ready for the great responsibilities that come with great powers. Miles Morales is the perfect centerpiece for this hero’s journey, allowing elder statesmen Peter Parker to play the part of the seasoned vet who shows his protégé the ways of the web. Add Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, Spider-Manga and Spider-Nic-Cage (“The wind smells like rain.”) and you have an unlikely arsenal of Arach-Knights that all stand for the same stuff Stan & Steve dreamed up when @marvel was in its infancy. Speaking of which, bring a crying towel for the heartbreaking cameo by @therealstanlee. Keep it handy for the moments Miles makes his leaps of faith. I’ll never not tear up now when I hear “Get up, Spider-Man!” The world needs this movie right now. See the sensational #spiderverse soon! #KevinSmith
