As impregnable as this massive section of the Great Wall around Beijing might appear, many historians say it did little to keep invaders at bay. Some say it was built as much for keeping the Chinese in and the soldiers busy so they had no time to think about revolt. Others say it was a calamitous and ill-conceived folly, draining China’s coffers while ultimately failing to keep marauding nomads out and leading to xenophobia and isolation. This history lesson might be instructive to President Trump.
