Went on a walking tour of Greenwich Village yesterday and learned several things that stuck with me: 1. The original Greenwich Village was built in THREE DAYS after a yellow fever epidemic around 1822 in Lower Manhattan. 2. Former tenement buildings which housed immigrants at the turn of the 20th century (for $1-2 in rent) are now some of the most desirable and expensive buildings in the city. This made me think about gentrification, all its complexities and how it has been an undeniable part of our history. 3. Don’t trust plaques on buildings no matter how official they look. 4. Even with one of the largest queer communities in the country, homosexuality was illegal in NYC until the 1980s. 5. Greenwich Village is one of the most picturesque places in the city during the holidays, but it’s deep and diverse history is what makes me appreciate it the most. ❤️
