In early 1947, the UN General Assembly set out to draft an "International Bill of Human Rights." Eleanor Roosevelt chaired a drafting committee, and after two years of work, the General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 70 years ago this week. The language of Article 1 is simple, and will sound familiar to every American: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." Seventy years on, we hold these truths to be self-evident, and this declaration is more important to honor and remember than ever.
