@アレックス・オノルド in full beast mode between hang board sets in his van. I took this photo a few days before Alex third classed El Cap. I’d seen Alex in good shape before but his training seemed to have mutated his body before his big free solo. I remember seeing muscles on his back that I’d never seen on anybody before…and I’d seen some pretty fit athletes. Alex’s preparations included deleting his social media apps for the months leading up to the climb to do more visualization of the route in his downtime. At one point in the weeks leading up to the climb, Alex told me he had taken a rest day. When I asked him what he did on his rest day, he chuckled and said “Well, it wasn’t a total rest day… I soloed Lower Cathedral, down climbed it, soloed Middle Cathedral, went down and soloed Upper Cathedral, then went over and soloed and down climbed Higher Cathedral Spire and Lower Cathedral Spire.” That’s a casual 65+ very real pitches in a day.
