From the August 8, 1949 fashion feature: "DIME-STORE FASHIONS—Five-and-ten jewelry and clothes are not only cheap but up-to-date." According to LIFE, "To visitors from abroad one of the perennial marvels of America is the five-and-ten crammed with household articles. In recent years the dime stores have added to their accomplishments. They have proved as fast—and three to four times as cheap—as many a department store at copying simple fashions."
