The Advent season began on Sunday and I’ve been spending some time meditating on Christmas Song lyrics over the past few days. We sang, “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus” in church this week, and this one line jumped out at me: “Dear desire of every nation Joy of every longing heart” Desire and Longing. This season is about anticipation and expectation. The hope of desires being met, of longings being fulfilled. I think sometimes I’m afraid to desire or long for things. To long for something… I mean really long for it, is such a vulnerable act, because it opens me up to potential disappointment, and isn’t it just easier and less risky to sit back and say thank you for what I have already? I mean, yes. I do think we should nurture a spirit of gratitude in our lives, but I also think that I may be depriving myself of a richer, more abundant life by not cultivating a space to allow my deepest desires to grow. I mean, what do I truly desire? Do I even know how to answer that question? It’s vulnerable to long for something, especially something big, and I wonder if we don’t allow ourselves to long for things because at a fundamental level, we don’t feel like we deserve the good things we hope for. Can anyone relate to that? I can. I think we are created to experience abundance and I believe we are allowed to desire big beautiful things and I wonder if making the space to name and nurture those deep desires will allow us to experience blessings that are even greater than what we could have imagined or hoped for. What do you long for? A partner? A family? Healing? Meaningful work that inspires you? Rest? Community? How will you make space for your longings and desires this season?
