The Montgomery Bus Boycott began on this day in 1955, the Monday after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man.

Rosa Parks was committed to fighting for justice long before her actions ignited a historic demonstration. She was an active member of the Montgomery NAACP, investigated sexual assault cases, and studied civil disobedience at the Highlander Folk School, which trained civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis.
